The pandemic hit all Americans incredibly hard: nationally, we witnessed a 70% surge in demand on US food banks, with 40% of those served being first-time users, and even today, one in three American families is food insecure, or one in two with children. At the same time, when COVID-19 first hit, over $1B a week of perfectly good produce was being thrown away at the farm level.
Within two weeks of school closures, Numi Foundation starting making free home deliveries to struggling families and seniors living in affordable housing developments. All produce was sourced from local family farms owned by women and people of color.
With our local partners OUSD, Growing Together, Salesforce, and Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, we delivered over 637,000 pounds of fresh, organic, culturally relevant produce to 6,000 high-need families, including 1,841 low-income seniors in Oakland, San Francisco, Marin, and Richmond. In the process, we created 25 packing and delivery jobs, all of which were filled by members of the same families in need.
Additional donations enable us to continue our work fostering thriving communities. Thank you for your generous support!
