Emergency Food Relief

Emergency Food ReliefThe pandemic has hit all Americans incredibly hard: nationally we’ve seen a 70% surge in demand on US food banks, with 40% of those served being first-time users, and today one in three American families is food insecure, or one in two with children.

Food banks and public schools have stepped up to feed the needy, with billions invested over the past year, but as a small organization Numi Foundation strategically focuses our efforts on the especially vulnerable households slipping through the cracks and unable to access food banks or reach free food distribution sites because they have tested positive and don’t want to infect others, or they face transportation or literacy barriers.

With our local partners OUSD, Growing Together, Salesforce, and Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, so far we’ve delivered over 637,000 pounds of fresh, organic, culturally relevant produce to 6,000 high-need families, including 1,841 low-income seniors in Oakland, San Francisco, Marin, and Richmond. We focus on making home deliveries to Latino, African American, and Southeast Asian families, sourcing all our produce from nearby struggling family farms owned by women and people of color, and the 25 jobs we’ve created for packing and delivery have all been directed to members of some of these families in need. Our senior food program is focused on low-income seniors of color living in affordable housing developments, and they also enjoy access to the same top-quality produce and mission-aligned labor pool.
